We at Dorset Council have just celebrated our second birthday, demonstrating our flexibility and ability to achieve great things even in times of enormous challenge. Now you have a chance to join us as we are working hard to give Dorset a stronger voice nationally to help draw business investment, attract Government funding and boost local economic growth. In 2018 alone we welcomed around 16.4million visitors to our wonderful county, which has a local economy worth £7.1 billion
Dorset has a rich, beautiful and historic environment. The Jurassic Coast has 95 miles of coastline stretching through Dorset and East Devon and is England’s only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site. More than half of Dorset is designated as an Area of Outstanding National Beauty and we have over 10,000 listed buildings within our well-preserved landscape. Our thriving market towns and villages have a strong sense of community and identity.
An opportunity has arisen for a new role of Head of Service for Growth and Economic Regeneration, reporting to the Corporate Director for Economic Growth and Regeneration. Our ambition is to put Dorset Council at the heart of our communities and to become a council that is bold and ambitious in its economic regeneration vision and aspirations. We have already started on this journey and are now looking for a leader to deliver an integrated approach to development and ‘turn up the volume’ on Dorset promotion; to Government and inward investors, and to increase the value of the visitor economy.
What you will be doing
As a senior leader within the Place Directorate you will undertake clear Council leadership across co-ordinated skills support, prioritising labour market supply and Covid-19 impacts. We will also be looking to you to unlock ‘Dorset’s USP’ sector opportunities and seize the opportunity to align development to net zero carbon targets. You will lead by example, working smart with a laser focus on delivering at pace and maximising return by exploiting Council assets and working in tandem with the development industry.
If you would like to be part of a team that is critical to the growth of the region, raising its profile with Westminster and beyond as well as seeking solutions to the breadth of issues which challenge communities across rural and coastal Dorset, this could be the role for you.
Your experience will include proven experience of regeneration and development, with a deep understanding of strategic & operational matters. You will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a wide range of stakeholders, including partnership relationships, and will have managed large complex initiatives and contracts as well as being able to show how effectively you can work within a political environment.
In addition, you may be able to demonstrate some private sector experience and evidence your experience of innovation to develop operational plans, effective performance and successful outcomes. Experience of alternative finance mechanisms (including land and property) and a track record of securing investment (public and/or private) is desirable but not essential, as is experience and expertise in wider economic development.
Why you should join us
We are a young, ambitious council, embracing innovation and serving vibrant communities of over 375,000 residents, providing over 450 services. We offer a fantastic range of employee benefits that include generous holiday entitlement (up to 31 days annual leave, depending on length of service, plus bank holidays), a Local Government Pension Scheme and flexible working in many roles. Our workplace culture is friendly, collaborative and creative, with strong support for continual learning and development.
Looking for a flexible approach to work? We would be open to discussing this with you. However, if you are looking to relocate here, then that’s great too. By coming to work for Dorset Council, you can enjoy a fulfilling job as well as a great quality of life, with some of the UK’s most beautiful countryside and beaches on your doorstep. Our flexible approach allows employees to have a great work-life-balance, with your wellbeing at its heart.
We are excited and confident for the future of our county – join us!
