The Governors of St Oswald’s CE Aided Primary and Nursery School are seeking to recruit a teaching assistant and after-school assistant.  This could be one person or separate posts.

St Oswald’s a small Church school of around 140 pupils plus a nursery.  It is located in the centre of Durham, close to the University.  There is a very successful and popular after-school provision.

The school is looking for someone who will join our strong school team as a teaching assistant to support children with additional needs including working 1:1 and with small groups, and to be part of our established after-school team working to support children in their play.

Please make it clear on your application form if you are applying for the two roles or just one of the roles (and which one).

The successful candidate(s) will be joining a supportive school community.  Our school motto is ‘Together we learn to love and shine’.  This applies to our staff as well as the children.  We are looking for someone who will be committed to helping our pupils to shine brightly and be proactive about their own professional development.

We warmly encourage potential applicants to contact the school for an informal discussion with our Headteacher and/or to arrange a visit.  Please speak to Mrs Wass in the school office 0191-386-8029 or email stoswalds.ce@durhamlearning.net to make arrangements.

The ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.

The normal working hours for this post are 1-3.30pm (TA) and 3.30-6pm (after-school) Monday to Friday.  There may be occasional additional planned training hours or attendance at staff meetings notified in advance.

Closing date for applications: 10th November 2025
Interview date: 20th November 2025
Please return completed applications to the school

Teaching Assistant role – Term Time only + 2 Weeks

Calculation of term time only plus two weeks’ pay

Term time only plus two additional weeks’ pay is calculated on the basis of the following:
• Number of ‘teaching’ weeks – 38 weeks; plus
• Public (bank) holidays – 1.6 weeks (8 days); plus
• Two additional weeks, inclusive of CPD – 2 weeks; plus
• Individual leave entitlement - 5.4 weeks (27 days) or 6.4 weeks (32 days)
Individual leave entitlement is calculated on the length of continuous service. Employees with less than 5 years’ service will receive 27 days annual leave. Employees with more than 5 years’ service will receive 32 days annual leave. For example:

Calculation for employees with less than 5 years’ service:
40 weeks (term time plus 2) + 27 days (annual leave) + 8 days (public holidays) = 47 weeks’ pay, to be paid in 12 equal monthly instalments

Calculation for employees with more than 5 years’ service:
40 weeks (term time plus 2) + 32 days (annual leave) + 8 days (public holidays) = 48 weeks’ pay, to be paid in 12 equal monthly instalments
