The Private Housing Standards Team in Sheffield City Council regulates the housing standards in the private rented sector.

We advise on housing conditions and management standards and have a twin track approach of working positively with landlords who take their responsibilities seriously, whilst taking enforcement action using the powers in legislation against irresponsible and rogue landlords.

You will study at Leeds Beckett University on their Environmental Health Practitioners (Apprenticeship) BSc course commencing in September 2024.

When not attending the course, you will be supported in learning and gaining experience in carrying out the role of a Private Housing Standards Officer.  You will also spend time in the Council’s Environmental Protection service to help you in completing modules of the study course such as food safety.

You will through this role work to ensure the homes of families and occupiers are free from serous hazards or risks to health.

The role involves office-based activities calling for good IT skills as well visiting and inspecting a range of private rented homes, house in multiple occupation and student accommodation.  Good communication skills are required as the role involves interaction will both landlords and tenants and preparing reports.

You will need to be academically strong with good organisational skills to enable you to complete the degree course as well as work-based training and carrying out duties related to the role.

The apprenticeship is for 4 years, and this is a temporary post for that period, apprentices who successfully complete the degree apprenticeship will be appointed to a permanent Private Housing Standards Officer role (Grade 6 23/24 £ 30,825- £ 34,834).

Applications are welcome from school leavers based on their predicted grades and who expect to achieve the degree course entry requirements of:

112 UCAS tariff points plus English Language, Maths and Science GCSE at C or above.

Any employment offer is conditional upon being accepted on the Environmental Health Practitioner Apprenticeship course at Leeds Beckett University and you will be supported in making an application.

In addition to a salary the tuition fees for the degree course will be fully met as part of a benefits package and you do not need a tuition fee loan.
