Kensington and Chelsea, London (Greater)
Job Type
Full Time

Help us deliver a cleaner, greener street trading service in London’s most iconic market locations.

The Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea is a fantastic place in which to further your career. As one of London’s most famous boroughs, we are committed to putting our local residents and businesses at the heart of every decision. And when those two worlds collide – such as with the need to support exceptional local markets that are important to both our communities and the street traders – that work is even more vital. Join us in this interesting role, and you could have a tangible impact on the success of traders, and the quality of life that our residents enjoy.

The Role:

In this fixed term maternity cover contract, you will support the Street Trading Office in ensuring our three markets (including the world-renowned Portobello Road Market) are an exceptional place in which to work and visit. It is imperative that these markets are well-managed, safe, clean and sustainable, and it is here that you could find an interesting role. Specifically, you will help us oversee 60 storage units at five locations, support the market traders with a variety of challenges, and deal with enquiries from future traders and residents.

This will make for a highly varied working environment, in which you could be tasked with anything from dealing with enquiries from the public, through to managing street traders’ payment accounts and handling problems that they are facing. With a great emphasis on maintaining precise records, you will take responsibility for the day-to-day management of street trading and storage unit accounts (collectively worth around £1 million), so you will handle invoices, payments and financial systems, identifying where improvements could be made.

About You:

To make the most of this fascinating opportunity, you will need to be a confident individual with great organisation and problem-solving skills and the capacity to communicate effectively face-to-face with the public and traders – which also means you’ll know how to diffuse situations! With the ability to manage your own working day and prioritise tasks, you will have plenty of initiative and innovative ideas, with the drive to get things done, and you’ll be IT literate. With a keen interest in waste reduction, it would be helpful if you have some understanding of environment issues and the relevant legislation, though a willingness to learn is equally important.

Crucially, you’ll have the flexibility to work alternate Saturdays (with early starts of 6.45am on market days), and you’ll be comfortable taking on a very hands-on role, that simply can’t be done from home.

In turn, we can offer you the chance to join a relaxed and friendly team, who work collaboratively to help each other achieve their goals – all against the backdrop of one of London’s most iconic neighbourhoods!
