Debt Officer

About Us:

Explore a deeply varied career path.

At the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, we’re committed to meeting the needs of everyone we can. Our focus at this high performing local authority is to ensure that every member of our community is able to excel in life, so to deliver on this ambition, we have created forward-thinking people-centric services that are efficient in their aims, and that are able to evolve to meet emerging needs. Our Corporate Debt team play an essential role in this work – making for a fascinating role in which you could contribute to the financial stability of the council and make a difference to the wellbeing of residents and organisations who are experiencing financial hardship.

The Role:

Join our friendly team, and you will have the chance to help us handle annual billings of around £120million a year. Supporting individuals and organisations who owe the council money, you will work with everyone from other local authorities and schools, through to private businesses and individuals who are being supported by Adult Social Care services. Managing customer accounts, you will collect debt and where needed, you will help them come to a sensible repayment schedule. With both individual targets and team targets to meet, you will have the impetus to plan your day, and pick up the phone to debtors to find a solution. From implementing recovery action through to reconciling customer accounts, this is a highly varied role, resulting in great satisfaction when you help people identify and tackle the blockers to repaying what they owe. Crucially, you will process Breathing Space requests, and you will adopt a genuinely collaborative approach to resolving complex cases and helping people and businesses to find better financial stability. While every day will present you with new challenges such as setting up Direct Debits and taking payments, plus liaising with the legal team and preparing ad hoc statements, you will have the opportunity to explore new approaches, and we will provide you with plenty of learning and career development opportunities.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information.

About You:

To be equal to this fascinating challenge, you will be a self-motivated individual who is both proactive and highly organised.  You will have a great degree of autonomy, though you will enjoy plenty of support through daily Teams meetings – plus the backing of colleagues who enjoy jumping into a challenge to help each other out. With a great phone manner and good IT skills (and the capacity to sort out occasional IT glitches yourself), you’ll be confident in the use of Excel and Word, and you will be capable of writing easy-to-understand emails. You’ll ideally have a background in debt collection and progressing debts through court enforcement, and it would be ideal if you have some adult social care experience – or simply an awareness of the tact required when working with vulnerable adults.

Please apply online explaining how you meet the requirements set out in the person specification and job description. CV’s will not be considered for this role.
