Deputy Chief Fire Officer

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is seeking to appoint a Deputy Chief Fire Officer (DCFO), with the skills, energy and innovative approach to deliver a high quality, affordable, modern and sustainable service to the people of East Sussex and the City of Brighton and Hove.

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service serves over 800,000 people and covers an area of nearly 180,000 hectares. Approximately a third of the population served is within the heavily urbanised City of Brighton & Hove. Operating as a member of our Senior Leadership Team, you will lead the Service Planning and Assurance function and provide strategic direction on all matters relating to IRMP, H&S and Governance.  This role is required to perform operational command at Gold Strategic Command level, assume operational incident command in the absence of the Chief Fire Officer and be continuously available to the Authority and Brigade for appropriate duties as may be necessary.  You will contribute to the development, planning and delivery of organisational objectives and strategy, driving continuous improvement across all directorates to ensure that the level of service to the communities we serve remains effective, efficient and provides robust governance and assurance.

We know that outstanding leadership and incident command experience can be developed in different settings.  That is why we think our next DCFO might be working in a forward-thinking Fire & Rescue Service, or in another emergency setting or a public service setting such as a local authority, the defence sector or perhaps a COO in the private sector or a senior HR, Finance or IT professional looking to utilise their expertise in a different setting.  A resourceful individual who is diligent, trustworthy, astute, reliable, you will possess excellent communication skills, strong political awareness, be highly knowledgeable of and deliver effective governance, financial acuity, a commitment to equalities and inclusion and with a proven track record of working with Trade Unions and resolving conflict quickly and effectively.  You will have the ability to balance conflicting demands and the calm character to deal with the pressures that come with an executive role.   Your ability to demonstrate inspirational leadership, motivating and developing others and making effective decisions with successful outcomes is essential.  We are an inclusive organisation and expect candidates to have highly developed interpersonal skills and key qualities such as openness, honesty and integrity to build positive relationships both within and outside the organisation.
