Wakefield is situated in West Yorkshire with excellent rail and motorway links to the north and south, including London.

Our district covers 339 square kilometres and is home to around 355,000 people. Almost 70% of the Wakefield district is designated as green belt.

Our district enjoys several sites of national distinctiveness, which include Pontefract Racecourse, Hemsworth Water Park, Sandal Castle and Nostell Priory. We are also home to the internationally recognised Hepworth Gallery and the National Coal Mining Museum.

You will be an integral part of the Financial Services Management Team and support the development and delivery of the service-wide objectives to ensure that a client-driven, pro-active and efficient service is delivered.

Specifically, you will lead and manage the provision of an efficient and effective Risk and Insurance Service to ensure effective service delivery aligned with Council priorities. This will include providing professional advice and support on all insurance and risk matters.

Additionally, you will support the Chief Finance Officer in ensuring that the Council’s approach to risk management is robust and contributes to improvements in service performance.

Furthermore, you will also provide support on projects and transformational change initiatives of a corporate and Council-wide nature.

This role will also lead on the Council’s Insurance Strategy and negotiations relating to Council insurance policies therefore leading to a well-managed insurance fund. Ongoing contract management will also be a crucial aspect of this role.

As well as working with senior officers and elected members, you will also work closely with the Council’s internal audit service in the development of a risk-based internal audit plan.

You will have a strong record of success in a large multi-disciplinary organisation particularly working with internal and external stakeholders to bring about transformational change.

We will need you to be strong on technical knowledge but also an excellent communicator with the ability to influence and work collaboratively across the organisation and with wider partners.
