Doing social change differently

A new research collaboration between Cheshire West and Chester Council, Keele Univeristy, Chester University and Mondrem CIC.

On 14th July 2021, a group of council leaders, academics and others will meet, to share experience and research about how to deliver real change after declaring a poverty emergency.

We want you to join us.

It starts by listening

In October 2020, Cheshire West and Chester Council made a Poverty Emergency Declaration.

They committed to working more closely with health, universities, trade unions and poverty-related community groups to improve their research and intelligence and using the experience of people affected by poverty to develop better policies and services which respond to their need.

Keele University’s Institute for Social and Inclusion (KISI) have bought together a multidisciplinary team of researchers and other experts. They have been listening to people who experience poverty first-hand, and to policy makers and service deliverers, to understand how experience of poverty should shape policy and services.

And you can join us

On 14th July, we will share our research, hear the related experience of political leaders and listen to the voices and experience of everyone attending as we pose the question ‘what next?’

We are particularly interested in hearing from council leaders, council workers, stakeholder organisations and members of communities where Poverty Emergency Declarations have been made or Poverty Truth Commissions have taken place. We also welcome participants from these groups of individuals from areas contemplating introducing a Poverty Truth Commission or a Poverty Emergency Declaration.

To find out more and register your interest, please use the form at the bottom of this page, or contact Gemma Loomes on g.loomes@keele.ac.uk before Friday 2nd July 2021.
"We are looking forward to working more closely with the other councils that have already shown an interest in making this declaration, to take our response to poverty beyond the immediate and the local and to play our part in pushing for greater awareness and fundamental change nationally.”

Cllr Mandy Clare, Lead Champion for Poverty and Equality, Cheshire West and Chester Council
