The Governors of St Oswald’s CE Aided Primary and Nursery School are seeking to recruit a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA).  This vacancy has arisen due to the retirement of the current postholder.  This is an established post in a caring and ambitious school.

St Oswald’s a small Church school of around 140 pupils plus a nursery.  It is located in the centre of Durham, close to the University.

The school is looking for someone who will join our strong team as an excellent HLTA.  The ideal candidate is someone who can plan and deliver engaging lessons across the curriculum and across the whole primary age range.  This role involves regular, planned cover for lessons in Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, and the successful candidate must also be able to step in to cover unplanned absence when necessary.

The successful candidate will be joining a supportive school community.  Our school motto is ‘Together we learn to love and shine’.  This applies to our staff as well as the children.  We are looking for someone who will be committed to helping our pupils to shine brightly and be proactive about their own professional development.

We warmly encourage potential applicants to contact the school for an informal discussion with our Headteacher and/or to arrange a visit.  Please speak to Mrs Wass in the school office 0191-386-8029 or email stoswalds.ce@durhamlearning.net to make arrangements.

The normal working hours for this post are 8.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday.  There may be occasional additional planned training hours or attendance at staff meetings notified in advance.

The ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.

Closing date: 3rd November 2025
Interview date: 11th November 2025
Please return completed applications to the school

As a disability confident employer, we are committed to employing disabled people and people with health conditions making reasonable adjustments to support disabled applicants when required.

Calculation of term time only plus two weeks’ pay

Term time only plus two additional weeks’ pay is calculated on the basis of the following:
• Number of ‘teaching’ weeks – 38 weeks; plus
• Public (bank) holidays – 1.6 weeks (8 days); plus
• Two additional weeks, inclusive of CPD – 2 weeks; plus
• Individual leave entitlement - 5.4 weeks (27 days) or 6.4 weeks (32 days)
Individual leave entitlement is calculated on the length of continuous service. Employees with less than 5 years’ service will receive 27 days annual leave. Employees with more than 5 years’ service will receive 32 days annual leave. For example:

Calculation for employees with less than 5 years’ service:
40 weeks (term time plus 2) + 27 days (annual leave) + 8 days (public holidays) = 47 weeks’ pay, to be paid in 12 equal monthly instalments

Calculation for employees with more than 5 years’ service:
40 weeks (term time plus 2) + 32 days (annual leave) + 8 days (public holidays) = 48 weeks’ pay, to be paid in 12 equal monthly instalments
