Are you interested in joining our friendly and welcoming Area 5 Highways team, where we take pride in managing the highway network in and around the Skipton area?
We are seeking a Highway Officer to become part of our dedicated team. Within Area 5, you’ll work alongside committed colleagues who strive to deliver high‑quality services, enhance road safety, and keep the network resilient and efficient for all who use it. This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your career within the Council, build your leadership skills, and make a meaningful impact across the region.
About the Role
As a Highway Officer, you will inspect the road network to ensure it remains safe for all users. Using your knowledge and judgement, you will prioritise repairs, raise works orders for contractors, and carry out emergency or minor repairs when required.
This role involves working independently within the community and includes frequent interaction with members of the public, Councillors, and other stakeholders. You will also take part in the winter maintenance rota, monitoring the network for hazards outside normal working hours. A van will be provided to support you in this role.
North Yorkshire Council (NYC) is reviewing some elements of its service currently delivered by NYC’s Highway Operations teams; this will see a shift of some functions, including the Highway Officer’s duties (and staff), to the council’s teckal company and partner contractor, NY Highways later this year. If you wish to discuss the implications of this move, please contact the Head of Highway Operations, Nigel Smith, on 0300 1312131.
