We’re pleased to be recruiting 15 apprentices to join Derbyshire County Council’s Highways Department as Civil Engineering Technician apprentices, undertaking the Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship.

Derbyshire County Council works with communities across the county to deliver essential public services, including the design, maintenance and improvement of our highways and transport infrastructure. As an apprentice, you’ll be part of a supportive apprenticeship community, gaining a nationally recognised qualification while earning a wage and developing valuable workplace skills.

You’ll receive ongoing support and mentoring from experienced engineers and managers within Highways, alongside learning delivered by our external apprenticeship training provider. This is a great opportunity to start, change or progress your career in civil engineering while contributing to infrastructure that makes a real difference to residents and communities across Derbyshire.

What you’ll be doing

As a Civil Engineering Technician apprentice within Highways, you’ll support the planning, design, delivery and maintenance of highways and infrastructure schemes. Your work may include:

  • Assisting with site inspections, surveys and data collection
  • Supporting the preparation of technical drawings, reports and cost estimates
  • Learning how highways schemes are designed, commissioned and delivered safely
  • Working with a range of teams involved in asset management, design and delivery
  • Developing an understanding of health, safety and regulatory requirements on construction sites

You’ll gain experience in both office-based environments and on site and will be required to travel across the county as part of your role.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for people who are motivated, willing to learn and interested in civil engineering and highways.

You’ll need:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs, including Maths and English at Grade 4/C or above
  • An interest in civil engineering, construction or infrastructure
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team
  • A practical, problem-solving approach

No previous experience is required – full training and support will be provided.

A full UK manual driving licence is required, due to travel between sites.

Great employee benefits

As part of Derbyshire County Council, you’ll enjoy a wide range of benefits, including:

  • Generous annual leave entitlement
  • Access to student and local discounts
  • Discounts at selected county leisure centres
  • Free online health and wellbeing sessions
  • Local Government Pension Scheme

Who can apply?

You can be an apprentice at any age. If you think you could make a positive difference and would like to be part of our Highways team, we’d love to hear from you!
