Primary Outreach Support Workers (x4)
Permanent, Term Time Only +2 weeks, full time.
Required to start September 2026.
Based across County Durham and The Woodlands provisions.

Are you passionate about helping children stay engaged in school and succeed within their communities?

The Woodlands is seeking four Primary Outreach Support Workers to join our growing outreach team.
This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside primary schools across County Durham, supporting children whose engagement, behaviour, emotional regulation or relationships in school are becoming barriers to learning.

This role is about early intervention, strong relationships and practical support. We are looking for people who can work alongside school staff to help children remain settled, included and successful in their mainstream placements wherever possible.

You will work directly with schools, staff, children and families to:
•         Support schools where concerns are emerging around behaviour, engagement, emotional regulation or relationships
•         Help schools identify barriers and develop practical strategies to improve outcomes for pupils
•         Model relational, regulation-focused and restorative approaches in live school environments
•         Support staff confidence and practice through coaching, collaboration and problem-solving
•         Deliver targeted intervention work with individual pupils where appropriate
•         Contribute to reintegration planning and wider early intervention work across the county

This is a varied and rewarding role which requires flexibility, emotional resilience and the ability to build positive professional relationships quickly.

We are looking for someone who:
•         Has significant experience working with primary-aged children
•         Has experience supporting children with social, emotional and behavioural needs and/or SEND
•         Understands behaviour as communication and can use relational and regulation-focused approaches in practice
•         Can work collaboratively with school staff, families and professionals
•         Is reflective, solution-focused and able to remain calm under pressure
•         Can work independently across a range of school settings
•         Holds a full UK driving licence and has access to a vehicle

Experience within alternative provision, outreach work or supporting pupils at risk of suspension or permanent exclusion would be beneficial.

About The Woodlands
The Woodlands is County Durham’s specialist provision for children and young people who are permanently excluded, at risk of exclusion, or unable to access mainstream education for a range of reasons. Our primary provision is growing rapidly in response to increasing need across the county, alongside the continued development of our outreach and early intervention offer.
We are committed to relational practice, inclusion and helping children feel safe, successful and able to learn.

We can offer:
•         A supportive and experienced staff team
•         Opportunities for ongoing professional development and training
•         The chance to help shape and develop an expanding outreach service
•         Meaningful and rewarding work supporting children, families and schools across County Durham
•         Mileage expenses for travel undertaken as part of the role will be reimbursed in line with council policy

The ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.

Calculation of term time only plus two weeks’ pay

Term time only plus two additional weeks’ pay is calculated on the basis of the following:
• Number of ‘teaching’ weeks – 38 weeks; plus
• Public (bank) holidays – 1.6 weeks (8 days); plus
• Two additional weeks, inclusive of CPD – 2 weeks; plus
• Individual leave entitlement - 5.4 weeks (27 days) or 6.4 weeks (32 days)
Individual leave entitlement is calculated on the length of continuous service. Employees with less than 5 years’ service will receive 27 days annual leave. Employees with more than 5 years’ service will receive 32 days annual leave. For example:

Calculation for employees with less than 5 years’ service:
40 weeks (term time plus 2) + 27 days (annual leave) + 8 days (public holidays) = 47 weeks’ pay, to be paid in 12 equal monthly instalments

Calculation for employees with more than 5 years’ service:
40 weeks (term time plus 2) + 32 days (annual leave) + 8 days (public holidays) = 48 weeks’ pay, to be paid in 12 equal monthly instalments.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and, if successful, you will need to apply for an enhanced DBS disclosure.

As a disability confident employer, we are committed to employing disabled people and people with health conditions making reasonable adjustments to support disabled applicants when required.
