This is an exciting time to join Calderdale’s Highways Maintenance service. We’re growing our teams, spending more and constantly seeking innovation to meet the challenge of maintaining our highway network.
To do this we’re looking for a talented and experienced manager to lead our operational maintenance service. In the role you will be responsible for approximately 30 members of staff and an annual budget of £8m.
The service covers all aspects of maintenance with a small technical team and a number of operational teams. The service is responsible for potholes and minor patching, masonry repairs, drainage investigations and repairs, gully cleansing and 24hr emergency standby. You will also manage the Service’s emergency and severe weather response including flooding, gritting and snow clearance.
You will ensure your teams work efficiently and effectively, and that the services provided are of a high-quality standard, demonstrate value for money, and deliver a positive effect on our communities. You will be responsible for financial reporting and budget management.
You will ensure compliance with relevant legislation and represent the Council in various forums, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with stakeholders. To improve service delivery, you will be expected to work in partnership with other Council services, external organisations, and agencies
The successful candidate will need excellent management, communication and negotiation skills, experience of public speaking in a challenging environment and working with elected members plus extensive experience in Highways maintenance.
Health and safety are key to this role. You will have an in-depth knowledge and demonstratable experience of safe working practices and regulations including the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, COSHH, LOLER, vibration at work and manual handling regulations. You will be familiar with the investigation and reporting of construction and operational based incidents and accidents.
The successful candidate will have a degree level qualification in a relevant area or equivalent experience.
