Westmorland and Furness Council is a unitary Council combining Barrow-in-Furness, Eden and South Lakeland districts which was created on 1st April 2023.  The Council is an ambitious authority, committed to putting our customers and communities first, and they are at the heart of everything we do.

These posts represent an opportunity for two individuals to join our friendly, welcoming and supportive Banking and Control Team.  The team is part of the Council’s Financial Services Team which includes Accounts Payable/Receivable, Income Management, Banking, Control Accounts and VAT. 

Who we are looking for…

 We are looking for two enthusiastic and motivated Finance Officers who are committed to supporting the Council’s ambition of becoming financially sustainable.  Working within a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities, they will need to be adaptable, organised and willing to take ownership of their work. 

As part of the Banking and Control team, the Finance Officers (VAT & Banking) will play a key role in managing VAT processes, bank reconciliations, and a range of control account functions.

Responsibilities will include:

• Assisting with the preparation of the monthly VAT return.
• Reconciliation of suspense, control accounts and other key financial records.
• Reconciliation of the Council’s bank accounts.
• Submission of BACS files to BACSTEL for Council Payments.
• Responding to requests for information from internal and external auditors.
• Providing support to colleagues across the wider Finance Team to ensure the delivery of a high-quality finance service across the Council.
