We operate a fleet of about 1200 vehicles across North Yorkshire. The fleet consists of a variety of vehicles from refuse collection vehicles, gritters, road sweepers, minibuses, tippers, cars and vans.
We work closely with NY Highways Ltd and other Brierley Group Companies and provide a maintenance service to those companies where required where there are a further 300 vehicles. We also operate about 200 vehicles on its Goods Operator Licence and 105 minibuses on Transport Act Permits. These vehicles must be operated under stringent undertakings that are made to the office of the Traffic Commissioners.
The safe operation and availability of vehicles is vital so that services are able to discharge their function without impediment, to ensure that road safety is maintained, and that the reputation of the Council is protected. We have PSV Permits and a standard LGV Operator’s Licence that require statutory compliance. Non- compliance with statutory undertakings can result in action by the Traffic Commissioner whereby they may suspend, curtail or revoke our Operator’s Licence preventing the Council from operating.
This is where you come in.
The Role
We are seeking someone who is highly motivated to join our Fleet Services team, supporting the Fleet Maintenance Manager in keeping our PSV and Light Fleet vehicles safe and compliant, and available for essential council services across the County.
This is a key operational role within Fleet Services. You will ensure vehicles are serviced and inspected on time, maintenance work is properly authorised and controlled, and fleet records and systems remain accurate and audit ready.
You will manage maintenance work orders, authorise repair work within delegated limits, liaise with workshops and suppliers, and act as a key point of contact for fleet customers across the Council.
Your work will directly support frontline services by ensuring vehicles remain safe, compliant and available when needed.
What you will bring
You will bring experience of working in fleet administration, maintenance co-ordination, or within a vehicle-related environment, along with the organisational skills needed to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
You will be confident in making decisions within delegated authority while maintaining strong attention to detail to ensure compliance and maintenance records remain accurate and up to date.
You will have strong communication skills and interpersonal skills, allowing you to build effective working relationships with colleagues, suppliers, and fleet users, and you will take a customer-focused approach to resolving issues and supporting services.
We are also looking for someone who takes a proactive approach to problem solving and is keen to contribute to improving processes and service delivery.
Knowledge of PSV or light fleet maintenance compliance requirements would be beneficial, although a willingness to learn and develop in the role is equally important.
