Bristol is a vibrant, exciting, diverse European City to live and work in. Come and help shape its future.

The City has ambitious plans to deliver an improved sustainable transport infrastructure, both in the City and within the wider region.

These plans include;

  • Transforming our local communities through the development of ‘Liveable Neighbourhoods’:
  • Developing Mass Transit options for the city;
  • Building on our success as Cycling City to further develop and implement a world class walking and cycling network in the city;
  • Making school journeys safer and increasing walking and cycling by implementing School Streets;
  • Trialling and testing new transport technologies through our ‘Future Transport Zones’ programme of work.

What will I be doing?

As a Principal Traffic Engineer with Bristol City Council, you will be at the helm of designing and delivering impactful urban transport projects, shaping the city’s future mobility. This role places you in a leadership position within the City Transport service, where you will collaborate closely with senior management, council members, and various stakeholders to create innovative, sustainable transport solutions.

Your expertise will guide high-profile projects aimed at improving the public realm, traffic flow, safety, and accessibility across the city, all while embedding the principles of the Healthy Streets Approach. This framework prioritises health, well-being, and environmental sustainability, creating streets that encourage walking, cycling, and vibrant community interactions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Design and Delivery: Lead the design and execution of transport projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and in alignment with planning and development briefs. You will oversee technical processes to guarantee that projects adhere to both statutory obligations and the Healthy Streets Approach, which focuses on creating healthier, safer, and more inclusive public spaces.
  • Leadership and Mentorship: Act as a mentor and guide to officers within the Area Engineering team, providing them with the support and technical expertise they need to deliver successful projects. You will also deputize for the Team Manager as necessary, ensuring seamless project continuity.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Serve as a key representative for the Area Engineering team, working in collaboration with Strategic City Transport and other departments within the Council. You will engage with local ward councillors, stakeholders, and the public to address area-specific priorities and traffic-related concerns.
  • Expert Advisory Role: Provide high-level, specialist technical advice to a variety of audiences, including councillors, senior management, working groups, and the public. Your role will also involve presenting expert evidence at public inquiries and contributing policy guidance in your areas of expertise.
  • Project and Resource Management: Oversee the management of allocated projects, ensuring financial forecasts and business plans are regularly updated. You will also coordinate and supervise contractors and consultants to ensure their outputs align with project goals and service priorities.

Healthy Streets Approach:

In your capacity as Principal Traffic Engineer, you will be instrumental in implementing the Healthy Streets Approach, a strategy focused on making Bristol’s streets safer, more attractive, and accessible for everyone. This approach considers every street as a space for human connection, aiming to create cleaner air, less congestion, and healthier, more vibrant communities. Your work will contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive city that supports active travel modes, reduces car dependency, and improves overall public health.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all working practices comply with the Council’s Health, Safety, and Welfare policies.
  • Maintain high standards of work quality, ensuring compliance with current legislation and Council codes of conduct.
  • Promote equality and diversity across all projects and services.
  • Complete all mandatory training as required by Bristol City Council.
