Could you be the person who brings strong civil litigation expertise to a busy, supportive in‑house local government legal team?

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Civil Litigation Solicitor who is ready to take the next step in their legal career, manage a varied caseload, and make a meaningful difference to the community we serve.

If you’re someone who is a qualified solicitor with a current practising certificate in England & Wales, and who has proven experience in civil litigation—ideally within a local government or public sector setting—this role could be an excellent fit for you. You may already have some understanding of employment law or be willing to broaden your expertise in this area as part of your wider civil litigation practice. You will bring strong analytical thinking, clear and confident communication skills, and the ability to negotiate effectively on behalf of the organisation. You’ll also be able to manage competing priorities, work well under pressure, and consistently demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to public service.

What’s the role all about?

This role sits within our in house local government legal team, where you will take responsibility for a varied civil litigation caseload. You will play a key part in advising council officers, elected members, and internal departments on legal risk and strategic approaches to resolving disputes. Your work will support positive outcomes for the organisation and the wider community, ensuring decisions are both legally sound and in the best interest of residents.

What will your day look like?

In this role, you will manage a diverse range of civil litigation matters, including judicial review, contractual disputes, property litigation, and regulatory enforcement. Your day may involve preparing detailed legal documents, drafting pleadings, and representing the council in court hearings, tribunals, or settlement discussions. You will work collaboratively with colleagues across different service areas, offering clear legal advice to support effective decision‑making. Alongside your casework, you will stay up to date with changes in legislation and case law, ensuring that the council continues to operate in line with current legal requirements and best practice.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a proactive and knowledgeable solicitor who feels confident managing litigation files from start to finish. You will be someone who enjoys analysing complex issues, solving problems, and explaining legal concepts in a way that is accessible and practical for non‑lawyers. You’ll thrive in a collaborative environment, work well with colleagues at all levels, and be motivated by the opportunity to use your legal expertise to support the local authority and its residents.

Why join us?

Joining our team means benefiting from a competitive salary and the attractive package of public sector benefits that comes with working in local government. You will also have access to flexible working arrangements, including hybrid and remote options to support a healthy work–life balance. We invest in our people, offering ongoing professional development and opportunities to gain further qualifications. You will be part of a positive, inclusive, and collaborative team culture—and, most importantly, you will have the chance to make a meaningful impact on your community through your work.
