Are you passionate about making a difference to our citizens and the district that they reside in? Then, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our Team
This is a varied and rewarding role at the heart of delivering real change across the Wakefield district. No two days are ever the same, and you will have a genuine opportunity to make a visible difference to the safety, accessibility, and quality of life for residents, businesses, and road users.
As a Traffic Technician, you will play a key role in shaping how people move around the district, whether that is improving parking arrangements, introducing safety measures, or responding to concerns raised by the public and Elected Members.
What You will Be Doing
You will be involved in the full lifecycle of traffic and parking schemes, including:
- Listening to and assessing requests from residents, Members, and stakeholders
- Designing practical, compliant traffic management solutions
- Developing parking schemes, traffic calming measures, and pedestrian improvements
- Supporting the preparation and delivery of Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs)
- Seeing projects through from early concept to on-site delivery.
This means you will not just design schemes, you will see the real-world impact of your work in the communities you serve.
Why the Role Matters
This role goes beyond technical design. You will:
- Help address real concerns raised by the public.
- Improve road safety and support sustainable travel.
- Balance competing demands for road space in a fair and practical way.
- Function as a visible and approachable representative of the Council.
You will regularly engage with residents, businesses, and partners, often helping to explain complex decisions in a clear and professional way, even in challenging situations.
What We are Looking For
We are looking for someone who is:
- Organised and able to manage competing priorities.
- Confident in communicating with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Technically capable, with a good understanding of traffic legislation and design standards
- Comfortable working both in the office and out on site in all conditions
You will need a solid grounding in traffic engineering principles, along with experience in preparing and delivering schemes and Traffic Regulation Orders. Review the job description for essential and desirable requirements.
What You will Get in Return
In return, you will benefit from:
- A dynamic role with real variety
- The opportunity to own and deliver projects from start to finish.
- Direct involvement in improving local communities.
- Ongoing development and exposure to a wide range of traffic and transport projects.
- A competitive salary.
- Generous holiday entitlement with the option to buy up to 10 extra days of annual leave.
- Hybrid working (subject to role suitability).
- Access to high-quality training programs to advance your career to the next level.
- We are committed to supporting the wellbeing of our staff. We recognise that resilient teams need good work life balance as well as supportive leadership.
- Discounted and subsidised public transport (Arriva Bus Annual Travel Ticket, Northern Trains Limited (NTL), MetroCard).
- Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) and a Shared Cost Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVC) scheme providing a tax efficient way to increase our pension.
- Great range of benefits including an Employee Assistant Programme, discounted membership to our excellent leisure facilities with free 12 weeks exercise program, discounts for a range of retail, entertainment, health and leisure providers, a cycle to work scheme, and many more.
